For nearly a million years, our ancestors grew to realize they were surviving, and not all that well, in an environment best described as "hell on earth." Over the past few hundred years, this hell has become a fairly tolerable "purgatory on earth." Our next step would have to be to work toward a "paradise on earth," culminating in an actual "heaven on earth."

...Just a passing thought...

assuming there is no hell as preached by most Christians, (a safe bet I think :) ), we are very likely to be happy with our afterlife and not dissatisfied if there is none.

For tens of thousands of years, this was the center of Egyptian doctrine and, with the advent of Doctor Who and SG-1, becomes a prime mover for sci-fi/fantasy stories, and is always a good reed, like tales of time travel. They take us back in time, they take us forward in time, they bring us to here and now. Many believe it would be nice to go on forever, others say it's time for a rest. Of course, the trouble with this attitude is that the desired rest is so permanent, and really not a rest at all, but a final goodbye, one to last throughout all eternity. A rather depressing turn of events.

There is nothing wrong with the belief, any more than with the many facets of Christianity (31.59%), both extremes of Islam (23.2%), mystics of the Hindus (15.0%), the logic of the awakening Buddhists (7.1%), traditional and not so traditional Judaism (0.2%), and the rest. After all, I am outnumbered (Non-religious -11.67%) (numbers are from Wikipedia).

For the above, I have to hope that reincarnation is true, but I am incredibly doubtful. I try to look at both sides of all issues, perhaps all three sides, perhaps more, but I remain agnostic (AKA like a Buddhist, a seeker of truth).

Still, very fascinating stuff.

..about 40 billion Earth like planets being the source of new souls.

That's a real possibility. And what's more, would explain why a society can go downhill quickly. At any given time our world may experience "migration" from other sentient worlds. The mass murderers and even the saints - could all be travelers who are accustomed to vastly different circumstances and hold totally different values.

It's the only thing that makes sense to me anymore. Once our bodies pass on, all the thoughts and wave forms they generated have to go somewhere. The brain isn't holding those memories in the cells. People with brain damage and partial lobotomies often have full memories. We also know that brain cells regenerate. So even the brain cell has a life cycle. This provides even more evidence to the notion that consciousness is something much more involved than just some molecules and electrical impulses crossing a synapse.

Just like the "I Love Lucy" broadcasts are still traveling in space, each of our thoughts is traveling too. The sum of every thought and experience we have had exists somewhere (or everywhere) as long as one has the right wave encoding to read and interpret that data we broadcasted when we think and live. Collectively, those thoughts, feelings and experiences contain our wisdom and our soul.

It doesn't stretch my imagination to imagine that this field of energy can travel and find a new body to manipulate and live with.

otherwise, when we die, all those thoughts would somehow have to be erased and cancelled out. And nothing about death could do that to those waves. Cells can die, but the sum of all the experience and knowledge would travel on.

At least that's my take. The other day I had a vision of a spectral cat soaring into the sky. I was awake and this image just was suddenly in my head. The cat was my parents' cat. A day later my mom calls me and mentions that the cat had died the day before. Coincidence? Foreshadowing? I don't think so. All these signals are broadcast all the time. Physical mass to it's field counterparts is like the photon/wave nature of light. Even the cats and animals are broadcasting their lives - and deaths too.

I knew when my friend had gotten into a car accident and her friend had died. I felt the impact and was jolted by it as if I had experienced it. How could I know? The accident was miles away. But I did because those waves of consciousness reach out and reach us at the speed of light.

Anyways, I've rambled on too long as it is. But I'm glad you brought it up. Reincarnation is less popular than ever with many. Science never wants to look too closely at death or even consciousness. I don't know why. But to me, reincarnation is just like sending a text to another phone - a really long text. xD

Though of the tools we have at hand to judge reality, I'd put our perception at the top.

My only point is that in a universe that began with a big bang, or something else, where I am me and you are you, where neither of us need to be, much less be here speculating about it; nothing is more odd, or silly, or improbable than what we perceive as reality.

Anything is possible

Half way through the book and I was about to write him a letter and give him a piece of my mind..but he is dead now. He would've just chuckled and said " See? I rest my case, thinking layman."

However, for myself, the whole book was worth my effort in the first chapter.
