You don't need a filibuster to enact a cloture.

The Democratic campaign ad earned Three Pinocchios because it attributed actions to McConnell that were largely the results of parliamentary tactics used by Reid.

Cloture is a procedure used to end a filibuster. Reid bent over backwards for years because the last thing he wanted to was use the nuclear option.

Even the liberal Washington Post says so. For one thing you don't need a filibuster to inact a cloture motion and Reid brought cloture motions when there were no filibusters. All part of his strategy to make the republicans look like obstructionist and you buy into it. And we should note that Obama was saying the same false statements. Deceit, deceit, deceit a well established pattern of this administration.

The 2/3rds majority vote was to protect the US people from one side trying to ram through extreme views, policies and candidates. If the people voted the senate with 2/3rds majority then there would be nothing the other side could do, but that didn't happen, so the minority has a voice representing the peoples vote. It's called checks and balances and keeps one side from going too far to the left or right of the country as a whole.
What Obama and most of the democrats have done with this nuclear option is saying we don't care what the minority of the people in the US want, we are going to do it our way and that is tyranny. This is a sad day in the history in the US when one party changes the rules for their own liking and trashing the minority voice.

No Democrat should be able to use the phrase "during time of war" without their head exploding.

"First time in history." Not true. Your sources are not reliable, to use the most generous term. I suggest you spread out a bit.

Note that Chuck Hagel is now, in fact, Secretary of Defense.

Nobody took away Obama's power to make nominees.

Try to get a grip. How many of his nominees, judicial or otherwise, have actually been blocked? Not just opposed, successfully blocked. How many were approved? How many were approved without any cloture votes at all?

I have these numbers. Do you? In short, this is about specific nominees.

Also, a lot of the charts being passed around rely on the reader not having a clear idea on the difference between "subjected to a cloture vote" and "blocked."

It is the prerogative of Congress to object to specific nominees if they feel the circumstances merit it. That was the case with Bork and other nominees in history. What Congress cannot do is take away the president's constitutional power to make nominees entirely. Judicial appointments are one of the most important long term things presidents do. It is what all presidents have done in the history of the republic. There was no specific objection to any of Obama's nominees. It was the very fact that he could make them. To use a legislative procedure (the filibuster) that is not in the constitution to undo a president's constitutional power is the issue here. YOu proved this point in your first comment here: "Obama was stacking the court." Yes, that is a president's prerogative.

I never heard "that's the result of elections" when a Republican was in office. It's as if all this political warfare crap never existed prior to 2009.

The word "Bork" has an official dictionary definition for a reason. And eight long years of Democratic dedication to the political destruction of George W. Bush didn't just quietly evaporate from the political environment. It left a scar.

Like so many other of their political principles, Democratic views on election victories only have one side.

The headline should be: Senate Democrats Annihilate the Minority in a Historic Unprecedented Power Grab

The parroting from the democrats of obstruction by the minority is false and hypocritical as you can see by this one example.

In an attempt to create the perception of Republican resistance, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev), has taken the extraordinary step of scheduling contentious cloture votes for 17 nominees who were otherwise on the normal path to routine confirmation, claiming “delay for delay’s sake.”

Of course, these desperate claims are entirely false: the Senate has already confirmed more of President Obama’s nominees (129) than it did during President George W. Bush’s entire second term (120), and has done so at an almost identical pace (average of 218 and 211 days, respectively, from nomination to confirmation). Indeed, not long ago Reid acknowledged that the Senate has “done a good job on nominations,” and a Judiciary Committee Democrat recently noted that we have been “speeding up the confirmation of judges.”

Claims of Republican obstruction are not only demonstrably false, they are highly hypocritical. The very Democrats now seeking to manufacture confirmation controversy personally devised and carried out a systematic effort to block President Bush’s judicial nominees through an unprecedented use of the Senate filibuster.
Claims of Republican obstruction are not only demonstrably false, they are highly hypocritical. The very Democrats now seeking to manufacture confirmation controversy personally devised and carried out a systematic effort to block President Bush’s judicial nominees through an unprecedented use of the Senate filibuster.

It is a matter of historical record that beginning in 2001, Senate Democrats dramatically changed the confirmation process. Throughout the Bush administration, Democrats actively sought to block numerous judicial nominees, forcing more than 30 cloture votes as Republicans tried to end persistent Democratic filibuster efforts.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), voted against cloture a record-setting 27 times. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), cast 26 votes to filibuster Bush nominees and, in 2003, defiantly declared: “Yes, we are blocking judges by filibuster. That is part of the hallowed process around here.”

Not to be outdone, Reid took virtually every opportunity to block Bush nominees, voting against cloture on 26 separate occasions. In his view there was no amount of time—“not a number in the universe”—that would be adequate for debate on the filibustered nominees.

Rather than retaliate by continuing with the obstructionist techniques Senate Democrats invented and implemented, Republicans have taken a more cooperative approach. We have confirmed more than 80 percent of President Obama’s judicial nominees, approving a larger share by unanimous consent than under President Bush.

During President Bush’s first three years, Senate Democrats forced 19 cloture votes on judicial nominees; during President Obama’s first three years the Senate took only 6 such votes. Indeed, contrary what some Democrats now claim, the reality is that 84 percent of all votes to filibuster judicial nominees in American history have been cast by Democrats. For those same Democrats to claim Republican obstruction is the height of hypocrisy.

Bold mine.

I used this Senator Lee article just because. ;-)
