China's efforts in space necessarily duplicate that which has gone on before. It seems to me she is proceeding quite rapidly to catch up with the other powers.

It seems as if she has a broad-front space program which is proceeding from milestone to milestone without many mistakes and will shortly have the same capacity as the rest of the space powers.

Of course she has he advantage of access to the technology of those who have gone before, whether legitimately or not.

But the last, the very last thing I'd do is underestimate an Asian country which has set it's national will toward a goal.

<p>Not much of a score.</p>

The Chinese have a remotely-operated rover haltingly moving out on the surface of the Moon 42 years after the U.S. had astronauts driving a car around the place.

42 years of tech progress and I'm looking at a frame-per-second movie.

Spend a little time at <a href="http://www.googlelunarxprize.org/" rel="nofollow">this website.</a>

...that as the wheels of the rover leave the lander it effortlessly cuts right through the first three inches of lunar surface regolith and reveals the hard rocky under-surface. That moon is like one big dust bowl waiting to gum up machinery and one is reminded why it's not human friendly.

I applaud the Chinese for their accomplishment. It's a shame they only really want to use the moon the way we wanted to back in 58 - as a giant spy satellite and potential missile launching base.

At least all America's Walmart purchases have indirectly bought some sort of lunar mission. And knowing the Chinese, they will follow through with their plans to turn the moon into a strategic base.

Meanwhile, NASA is busy doing ethnic outreach. It just goes to show you that Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein and all the rest never quite predicted the future US dystopia right. It was hard to imagine the future generations would become less motivated, intelligent or scientific. None of them quite ever predicted a complete cultural regression.

Score one for the Reds.
