“America’s time has come. Like Constantinople or Rome before it the nation has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die. When a forest grows too wild, a purging fire is inevitable and natural. This is the most important function of nature. It is one it has performed for centuries. America will be destroyed because it has become corrupt and decadent. Every level of government is compromised and its citizens abhor the very people who are trying to save it.”

Everywhere I look I see America crumbling from within. It’s not the barbarians fault or the plebs. It’s the government and the educational institutions that have rotted away and are awaiting the final collapse. Unlike Bruce Wayne, I don’t think America will be saved. I fully expect China to be the sole superpower by 2050. We all better learn and teach our kids Mandarin. ; )

The only place you ever see oppressive corporate dictatorships is in science fiction books and movies, where they abound.

Oppressive government dictatorships? Too many real-world examples to count.

The blame then, as today, lies with the greed and hypocrisy of the oligarchy, the ruling elites: the lawyers, politicians, priests, generals and merchants. Especially the merchants, for they, after all, make all the others possible–and necessary. They benefitted the most from the status quo, and they had the resources to bring change. They were in charge, they made (or failed to make) the key decisions. They have no one to blame but themselves.

The artists try to warn us, but nobody listens, and the masses simply respond as best they can.

This film and others like it are for the young and clueless. The under 24 crowd that drive movie sales. Like an Ayn Rand novel come to life, the entertainment industry works to get the middle class to say yes to self-immolation. To get citizens to see all other people of all nations as “victims” of their prosperity.

There are enough ignorant people in the world who really do believe that stuff. There are lots of poor illegals who want to believe it. There are even more selfish people in the world who don’t really believe it, but who profit from such a false and destructive ideology and will exploit it – many of them the very ‘super rich’ that the film try to portray as monsters. Ironically, many are monsters. But not because they want to keep people out. Quite the contrary, the evil rich want to restore de facto slavery by sustaining a two-tier economy. An economy of the very rich on top – and the poor illegals and their descendants on the bottom. They don’t need a middle class. It serves no useful purpose to a monopolist. In fact, a middle class just threatens a monopolist. A monopolist seeks a nation filled with poor, uneducated purchasers – the more dumb the better.

As for the young, they don’t know what to believe. They are very easily programmable. Just wind ‘em up give them a ’cause’ and they will keep marching in the direction you point them at least until they hit 30 when they start to wake up and see the world more clearly. It’s no wonder the jurists in ancient Athens couldn’t be under thirty years of age.

In Rome, the emperor Caracalla (who killed his brother, lawyer and almost everyone else he encountered) made all people in Roman territory Romans and conferred upon them certain rights. This was his revenge on Rome. By doing so he began the decline of the Empire and the period of 30 tyrants had its start as more barbarians from all over felt entitled to Roman wealth and lifestyle. The lamp of civilization was dimmed and this same thing can be seen today.

Whether it be a Kardashian, Kanye or a Miley, culture is pandering to those with the least intelligence and imagination. We are witnessing the move away from science and exploration to a culture centered around ‘selfie’-indulgence, self-affirmation and a populace that are addicted and controlled by screens and prescription drugs. At any college or high school you will now see kids not talking to each other – just walking and staring at their personal screen. They are desperately lonely and want a cause to embrace – to feel human again in an age of robotizing.

So the middle class self-immolates as the barbarians flood the gates. Elysium is just designed to spur more flickering corpses.

Those who buy into it, deserve the life they get and need none to pity them.

The Darwin awards play out every day at every scale one can observe or measure.

Films like this are always ludicrous to some degree. The plot is exaggerated. There could never be a world like they portray. The idea of a LEO colony over a wasted world is beyond belief.

The liberal ideal would be something liken this: The masses will be housed in clean little boxes with the robo-docs freely available to all. Population will be maintained at an acceptable level and the general population will all die at an age determined by the ruling class.

The ruling class will live apart from the masses in perhaps asteroid colonies, (certainly not impractical LEO). The masses won’t be aware but their caretakers (rulers) will enjoy far greater circumstances and they will live as long as they choose.

Then masses will live in complete contentment. Any individual born with abilities that surpass the norm will be plucked and made part of the ruling class.

All will be well as long as the rulers do not evolve to a point of no longer needing the masses and become bored with their role as caretakers.

The liberal dream is to create a world where the oppressed don’t know they are oppressed.

What better way to keep the riff raff out? Just make sure they can’t afford to follow you.

No different than “Avatar” or a legion of other films that play these cards. The plot and premise of “Elysium” make no sense as a whole, but who cares, right? Think over the film’s ending, and see if you notice a glaring problem.

Note that the people who make these movies live in places like Beverly Hills. The target audience isn’t going to make that connection.
