I'm pretty sure he had no idea what it was, just thinking it looked really neat. No doubt Putin knows what the crusifix represents, but wearing it might be nothing more than it looks good, maybe softens his image with whomever he might be with at the time. Hypocrisy is not necessarily a property of the religious mentality, nor the opposite. I've come to the conclusion that neither good or evil has anything to do with whether one is religious or not. They have nothing to do with each other. What really troubles me is that those who are truly bad never really understand that they are. They think they are the normal ones, and that everyone else is either stupid or evil. They can hurt others with a perfectly clear conscience, because the people they hurt have it coming to them. That's not hypocrisy. Its worse. People are really good at making excuses. And most times they don't even realize they are doing it.
