Note how this guy is an absolute jerk, harmless, but a jerk nonetheless, and how his elegant and attractive wife and his normal teenage son treat him with bemused contempt.
I can see how you might target ads for household products to housewives by exploiting their fear that their husbands are on the verge of morphing into one of the three stooges. But I see examples of this kind all over the commercial spots on TV. Why is American manhood under attack by Madison Avenue? Only the Viagra ads show rugged Marlboro men hitching up teams to their pickups, jury-rigging their mainsheets and starting fires with flint and steel.
I don’t think this is accidental, or coincidental. The advertising industry is research-driven and highly sophisticated. They know exactly what they’re doing, and they are doing it because it works.
