Being the only liberal, progressive reasonable person on the HZ. No one else has researched many of these issues. As a wise man said, when everyone else is looking right, someone needs to look left! :-)

It's tough being the only moderate, middle-of-the-road, centrist, reasonable guy in the Zone. Everybody else, left and right, thinks I'm a partisan extremist. 8)

Iran is not crazy. It is under attack from Israel and the US, and doing it's best to survive. The US anti-missile defense is to prevent a retaliatory strike after a first strike from the US or Israel.

Read the news, even the American news. Who is attacking it's neighbors, who is persecuting it's captives, who is assassinating perceived enemies throughout the world? It's not Iran. If they want nuclear weapons it's because they know that's about the only way to avoid an Israeli cabal.

The US has screwed over Iran ever since it, the US, overthrew a democratically elected government and installed a dictatorship. And then the CIA instructed the SAVAK in methods of torture.

I know you believe the Israeli propaganda, having been exposed to it all your life. It does not hold up to scrutiny, though. The Rest Of the World knows this, but US media is afraid to explain or report on the reality over there.

We have more than a few of our own right here. They can be identified by their conviction that the future is a binary choice between submission to Islam or Armageddon.

I believe this is a problem that will eventually go away on its own, just like Communism did. We simply have to isolate it, counter it, be ready to defend ourselves against it if necessary, let them know we are ready to do so, and let it run its course. It will, you know. In the long run, the alternative we offer the world is better, and the world, and Iran, will eventually embrace it. The Iranian people are a lot more interested in jeans than they are in Jihad.

As I understand it the Iranian's cannot initiate a war for the return of the 12th Imam(Mahdi)but can only retaliate against the oppressors and nonbelievers for the End of Times to begin. That's why the general said a conflict with the US is the 'strongest dream' of the faithful. It's only when a conflict started by another country can the Mahdi return to rule the world with Shia Law.

The Iranian leaders already believe that the End of Times theology has been set in motion and have called for preparation of war, but I doubt the US will fulfill their dreams of war with us in the near future.

And with that said is there a solution other than submission to their radical thinking and way of life?

I guess never going to war with Iran might be one, but that would end their hopes of the destruction of the US and Israel.

It is up to Iran to strike the first blow, and up to the United States to defend to the best of its ability -- which has a pretty long reach. Note that, before any retaliation, this blow must be directed toward the United States, and/or what would be considered US Interests.

Bowser probably thinks that would likely be an extreme act, and it is, for both sides. War is always an extreme act.

With Brig. Gen. Salami blowing up this way while addressing a secretary of state from any nation, it begs a rethink of Western policy toward the Middle East in general, and common strategic lines. At the moment, Iran, like the United States, is an open country, and it would be small work for a strike team to silence the good general. This, of course, raises concerns regarding the United States' own claims to moderate diplomatic tactics, but does nothing to change where this newest contention truly stands.

Walk softly, but keep the Louisville Slugger within arm's reach.

General Salami claims in your report that Iran is ready to attack the Great Satan "should the U.S. attack the Islamic Republic". Well, you pretty much can't blame them for retaliating if they are attacked first.

We don't have to take the General at his word. He could be getting ready to attack us first, in which case he would be crazy to warn us, knowing our ability to retaliate. Then again, if we're not going to take him seriously, there's no reason not to believe this is just a bluff, a little saber-rattling for his domestic audience or some threats to either intimidate or provoke us into doing or not doing something.

Either way, nothing this guy says about what he might do if we do something else should dictate what our policy should be. Whether or not he intends to attack us, or when, and whether or not he has the capability or intention to do, have absolutely nothing to do with what this guy says.

Yes, Iran is a danger to the whole world, they are fanatical Islamic state causing trouble all over the world and they are actively pursuing military nuclear technology. That alone is enough to scare the crap out of anybody. But what this guy says don't mean squat, and it should no more guide our strategy than Sen McCain's
"bomb, bomb, bomb; bomb Iran" Beach Boys parody should guide theirs.

Not threats, but dead. And when they get frustrated and rant, saying if you attack us we'll retaliate we call them "extremists".

Most countries, by the way, say if you attack us we'll attack you. Seems to be ubiquitous. I think even the US is that "extreme".
