Chromebook. Sleek, fast and efficient. Lets you live online, the browser is your computer. I love it. Windows is now just something I use at work, like a pen or a chair.

All the development tools I need I can find online and run either client-side in the browser or the cloud.

The machine itself, a modest Samsung, is small and light and has in just a few weeks become the computer I've most enjoyed using.

Most anti-virus programs have a system clean-up feature, which might include de-fragmenting the disk, removing temp files, and cleaning up the registry.

The registry tends to get filled with entries that don't do anything. But it still has to try and process them. There are those who will tell you to not f**k with it, but the older a computer gets the more plaque builds up. At least that's the way I understand it.

I've used Ccleaner, Norton, and AVG to clean my registry. I have seen the best results using the free version of AVG, which really helped me clean out a nasty infection recently that prevented a windows update from successfully installing.

The link to the Dashboard was hidden in "Profile".

Now why the fuck didn't I think of looking there?

Well, at least I found a draft of an old post there that mysteriously disappeared before I could post it--I'll let you guys figure out where it is.

and just below the box:

Media player cheet sheat

I didn't know you could (or needed to) 'cleanse the registry'. Although I occasionally remove from the registry software I no longer have installed, or software I wish to download anew.

It appears the designers of Windows never heard of the First Law of Programming: Never test for an error condition you can't handle.

In the Control Panel Box, is a link to the dashboard. Click it. See recent comments, etc. Robert wants to phase it out, but you should have the permissions to use it. I don't use it unless I'm in a moderating mood.

Has your registry had a nice (gentle) cleansing lately?

If you ever need advice on motorized chairs, let me know.

My wife uses her Jazzy 600 for distance travel (she usually manages walking with canes and a wheeled walker) and even uses it at work when she's doing a shift that requires her to move around the floors instead of staying in the pharmacy.

Logistics is workable. I've got a specialized vehicle with a lift, but my other normal car has an outside lift that hooks onto any Class 2 trailer hitch.

My wife resisted a motor chair for a long time, worrying that it meant "giving up" on her walking, but now she can burn me out on the hiking trails, the malls, museums, and anything that needs a lot of moving around.

Your choices are your own, and haven't been imposed on you without your knowledge or consent.

Unlike you, I haven't thought it all the way through yet.

Isn't it a hoot? I was initially attracted to the Zone because I felt it would expose me to what was happening now, everything that was new and wonderful about our brave new world. Instead, I seem to have wandered into an old folks home, limbo, the waiting room.

I am torn between two mutually exclusive alternatives. I have been allowed access to a wonderland which could immeasurably enrich what's left of my life, one which I'm too lazy or short-sighted to embrace--or--I'm being sold a bill of goods, an easy way out, a fantasy land populated by clueless zombies: either the opening of the doors of perception or an opioid escape.

Like I said, I haven't thought it all the way through yet.

I do watch a lot of television divided about 50/50 between entertainment and purportedly educational stuff on the science and history channels. About 80% of my TV viewing is pre-recorded on the dvr which allows me to skip through the commercials. Of course I catch a few and I am amused by some but I am sold nothing.

I have lost about 75% of my lower body mobility and I pretty much stagger around with a cane these days. It is better than a wheelchair only because of the lousy logistics that go with a motorized chair. If my health otherwise holds out, the chair looms in the future. Anyway, I can't do the outdoor activities that I once enjoyed.

My computers are very important to me. They are my short term memory and they allow me to recall things that I have known a long time but just can't recall at any particular moment. I also conduct most of my business by computer. It would be very frustrating to live without them.

Computers are about 75% of my social life. All by rowdy friends have settled down (or died) and beyond an occasional dinner out with my dwindling group of friends. All the conversations and bull shit that I once enjoyed with my co-workers and bar buddies are now on this site, and a few other forums.

I would rather be 20-30 years younger and doing all the stuff I once did with the 20-30 years of wisdom I would bring to the process but as the saying goes there is nothing good about growing old except the alternative and I am content most of the time.

If it all went away for some apocalyptic reason, I could probably replace the TV and computers with books and painfully dragging my lazy ass out of the house more but it would have to be cold turkey. I could not cut back, any more than a drug addict can just do a little bit of drugs. As long as it is available.

I am hooked and I would miss my tech way more than I miss my ability to jog around the block.

Just what is the "dashboard"? I hear you guys talking about it all the time. I click on the pencil icon to edit, and the balloon icon to comment. They seem to work just fine.
