I think our situation here is pretty secure. Silicon Valley, i.e. South Bay, is a broad flat plain, with a few creeks and a couple of urban rivers. It's not really an alluvial plain, to my way of thinking, because there's no dominant river carving the landscape. What flooding we get from time to time seems well controlled. There are frequently mudslides in the surrounding hills, but nothing reported so far.

It's far Southern California that's at risk, especially San Diego county, which recently had wilfires that left a lot of naked hillsides behind. There've been evacuations already, and it's only a matter of time, I think, before we get the first report of mudslides.

We had months of below average precipitation when we got our annual amount in a few days last September. We're still cleaning up the mess.

I don't live in a flood or mudslide area, so mostly for me it's just rain. I just hope some of this is getting to the Valley.

Not so much up where Tom lives.

Forecast is for two inches, and the flooding will get worse. Caltrans has been rescuing stranded motorists, and earlier today the cops had to rescue a homeless man who was stranded midstream in an urban river. That's just San Jose. I'm sure there's a lot more like that in the North Bay--there always is.

Huge hassles, but everybody knows we need the water.
