Lots of good intelligence to be gathered down there, on local defenses and communications between all the other navies operating down there.

The first one of a satellite image that turns out to be nothing and now the seismic event.

Looks like the US is going in its own direction from pings that put the plane in the vicinity of the Indian Ocean

alarms go off, air hisses noisily out the cabin, people's ears pop painfully, the masks drop, and the crew has a well rehearsed drill they immediately go into. The passengers might panic and pass out, but the crew would be able to keep the aircraft under control, especially the flight deck crew.

Even a gradual drop in cabin pressure would still set off alarms.

A loss of cabin pressure, either sudden or slow, without oxygen masks dropping, and the passengers are incapacitated in a minute, dead in a few more.

At the time this happened, it was 1:30 in the morning. How many passengers are even awake at that point?

On the map SteveS posted, note that two seismometers will yield two solutions. The other location is the blue circle in Indonesia. A third station is needed to pin down which of the two solutions is the correct one. Or a deduction from known seismicity. No information is provided as to the depth of the hypocenter. But again, more than two stations are need for that determination (picture those circles as spheres, and their resulting intersection pattern underground).

USGS doesn't show anything in the area, but they only show 2.5 and above.

And yes, I don't think there would be enough residual momentum once the aircraft came to rest on the sea floor. Hitting water is like hitting concrete at speed. A bullet only goes a few feet into water.

I can't see how an aircraft crashing into the surface of the sea could create a "seismic event". And an aircraft crashing into the sea floor, even if it was not broken up, couldn't make enough of a disturbance either? Could it? And isn't that whole area seismically active? "Ring of fire" and all that?
