If I knew how to get to Windows 7 or Vista without buying anything from MS I'd do it. As it was I had lots of updates as I hadn't used it, getting a Chromebook in the meantime. I just got it about a year ago, and it's been sitting for 6 or 8 months.

That flexibility is probably a good reason to order from Dell.

My new engineering laptop will have Windows 7, 64 bit.

Ordered it last week, custom designed from Dell with everything except its own plutonium power supply, and should have it by the 24th. It'll be my travel machine and my backup for the Win 7 desktop I use most of the time.

My two XP machines will be quietly retired. One I'm going to get rid of completely, a huge tower with an immense picture-tube display. My old Thinkpad I'll keep, running it off the net for a few applications that don't deal with 64 bit systems.

My wife and kids are running Apple laptops, and I keep them going, too. I'm comfortable around multiple systems, and by the time I get forced into Win 8 or 9 (sometime around 2020 by the latest schedule) they should have it in decent shape.

Mme Reclus has 8.1 on her new machine.

My old computer has Win XP, which will no longer be supported by Microsoft, and my system cannot be upgraded. Since all I do online is email and web surfing, I am going to transfer my business to my wife's machine, remove everything on my machine of potential value to thieves, back up all my files, and upgrade my antivirus. My machine works great (except for a few peculiar quirks I have developed work-arounds for)and I refuse to replace it until I absolutely have to. When and if it finally gets corrupted, I'll get an Apple laptop.

If I have to go through the pointless aggravation of learning a new operating system, at least I'll have the satisfaction of sticking it to Mr Gates' Greed Machine.
