Cowboy is doing “show and tell” for grade school class. He’s explaining his dress – the hat is to protect from sun and rain, the kerchief is the same, the shirt is heavy and protects from brush, too, the chaps protect his legs and pants from stickers. The gun is loaded with birdshot to deter snakes.

“Why are you wearing tennis shoes?”, one little boy asked.

“So people won’t think I’m a truck driver!”

The first bad regardless of whose fault it was. The second was worse because, based on what I see on LA Ink and other tattoo shows I have watched, almost any tattoo can be completely covered by another, if properly done.

But for a man working in the saddle all day in thorny brush country, they are an incredibly practical garment.

Likewise the boot (easy to find the stirrup and lock your foot in), and the hat. The same goes for the bandanna and other parts of the western rig. I admire and respect cowboys, but have nothing but contempt for those who are all hat and no cattle.

Of course, it can’t be denied that in “Urban Cowboy” Travolta gets Debra Winger. Sometimes we just have to face the fact that there is no justice in the world.

I was assisting one of my new guys into the barracks in Panama. The first thing out of his duffle back was a set of chaps. Then came the boots, followed by his fencing hammer.

“W’ll, they’re expensive,” he explained.

Then again, he was from Wyoming, and his previous job involved a lot of range-riding.
