It may sound silly regarding traffic, but it's the argument used by people who advocate legalization of drugs. It was the argument used by folks against prohibition. It's used by people advocating wider gun ownership, offering immigration immunity, any number of things.

Actually, murders continue even though there are laws against it. Burglary, rape, embezzlement, all manner of crimes. If we legalized all of them, the prisons could empty and bigawd, the country would be crime-free in one fell swoop.

If only stupidity could be criminalized, a felony, at least they couldn't vote.

They can recite the dialogue of "Thunder Road" from memory.

The [1958] film became a cult classic and continued to play at drive-in movie theaters in some Southeastern markets through the 1970s and 1980s.

From the Wikipedia entry for the film.

This is a common cultural stereotype. In my opinion, I believe it originated with the wave of public adulation for Jesse James, which somehow conflated his exploits as a ruthless sociopath and killer with his alleged status as a champion of Confederate values following the Civil War.

The "outlaw" is a common theme and archetype in rural Southern working class culture: witness Waylon and Willie, the Florida motorcycle gang, and Johnny Cash. I interpret it primarily as a subconscious reaction to religious fundamentalism, sexual frustration, and systematic economic repression.

That's not snark, that's maybe inspired by this morning's report at Wonkette, Sovereign Citizen Guy Will Protect Us All From The Unending Tyranny Of Traffic Enforcement

To blockquote a blockquote:

“I’m not willing to pay for something I didn’t do anymore,” Mulberry resident Jim Sanders was quoted as saying. “I’ve put out enough, given them enough. I’m not going to do it anymore.”

Sanders’ license was suspended after accumulating more than $900 in fines for various traffic violations, including possession of multiple licenses and failure to signal. After refusing to pay the fines, Sanders began taking the rifle with him while he walked. Police said state law allows him to do so, as long as he does not use it to threaten anyone.

What bait, there's more!

When it comes to driving, as a sovereign man, he says it’s a right, not a privilege.

But when asked if it would be okay for a 5-year-old to drive, his answer was, “I don’t think the parents should allow a child to do that.”

When pressed on how a parent would have the right to tell a sovereign child what he or she could do, his answer was, “the parent is there.”

And that's the end of the world news from Planet Wingnut.

but there is some truth to what you're saying, and reflecting on it might reveal what lies at some of the fundamental psychological differences between Liberals and Conservatives. Automobiles, just like guns, seem to play a very big role in defining what it means to be manly in our culture.

I plead guilty myself to this charge. I was a keen motorsports enthusiast until I grew up and replaced it with a truly masculine pastime: sailing. After all, any gurly man can drive a car. Sailing a boat is something else entirely, requiring both skill and courage. Not to mention, my Beetle's air-cooled engine soon became a victim of the nanny state.

Since I've been old enough to keep track of these things, Conservatives have opposed a number of automotive-related policies that have been championed by Liberals. Their objections have centered about their supposed intrusion on personal freedoms, and the cost of implementing them to the auto industry. The Libs, for their part, have argued that these proposals had alleged benefits for the society as a whole that trump their effect on motorists. These include, but are not limited to...

The introduction of seat belts, air bags, and other safety-related equipment, including child safety door locks and seats.

Encouragement of consumers to purchase smaller, more economical and fuel-efficient cars, including the deprecation of the V-8 muscle car culture.

Promotion of lead-free gas and gasohol.

The 55 MPH speed limit, for both safety and economy.

The installation of catalytic converters and other pollution-control equipment.

Fuel consumption standards.

Air conditioner coolants.

Can you think of any others?
