A male gay couple I know who are wealthy, stable, completely nice guys who contribute much to the community just adopted a baby. After much effort and expense.

The baby died of a hidden congenital defect 11 days after adoption.

They had so much to offer that child. The child had much to give them. And it died.

I read the story, and cried. I know the guys, not well, but have they participated in an intervention. One can get very angry with the unknown and uncaring forces which run this place.

And you try to prepare yourself mentally so you won't be taken unawares when it happens to you.

But when it happens to someone you care about, through no fault of their own, it hurts. And it always seems so unexpected. The universe is indifferent, but we're not. We not only experience our own pain, we can feel the pain of others.

Love is when the happiness of others is essential to our own.

Life is a complete crapshoot with the various outcomes not based on merit, good works, justice, fairness or any other standard connected with "deserving".

The vagaries of existence are infinite, unending and almost random. The only answer to "Why?" is "Why not?"

I've seen what I consider to be unfairness and injustice too many times to continue to demand of an uncaring universe answers which will be understandable to my mind. If there are any, they are incomprehensible to someone who wants to believe in fair or unfair, right or wrong.

If the ocean is considered uncaring, the universe is infinitely more so. It just is, one second at a time.

I'm very sorry for your friend and her family. I hope someday, some way, somehow they can find something positive in their experiences. It's nothing personal.

a word that is often overused.
I am a very caring person, but I don't smother. I am learning to voice my thoughts more. My best friend had a double mastectomy and her bravery is a lesson in grace for me. Her lesson from me is that I went through it with her. Actually we talked very little about what was happening and more about what life has in store for us. She never let the cancer define her. I love her so much.

And she was genuinely fond of us. But other than a sincere friendship, our relationship always was strictly professional.

She contacted one of her friends at work via an email dictated to her husband. She requested the news not be communicated to the others. I suppose she has her reasons.

...is that you cared for Annie and when you found out she was sick, you never let her know what she meant to you.

That is sad.
