https://www.starpath.com/catalog/accessories/HP2.htm

You aim it like a rifle, and its damped with oil so you can shoot even from a rolling deck. Waterproof and shockproof, dead accurate and readable in complete darkness. Chris Columbus would have given his left nut for one of these. The Vikings would have given both.

T’was a mere witticism, born of mine own night forays through Panamanian wildernesses, with naught but my trusty compasses and local charts to shepherd me and my crew, ER. Blazing under a double canopy, star-ranging required numerous slipping climbs to great, unsteady heights. Better, safer to remain earthbound.

Ah, for my blessed lensatic, divided 360 times (degrees), and my amazing M2, sliced 6400 ways (mils), my radioactive companions, which saw us through so much...

In fact, whatever amount it does finally settle down on will only be after a long period of variations and oscillations, and it will vary depending on where on earth you are. Also, the time scale over which this happens may be thousands of years, or will be interrupted by long periods of change and alternate behavior. And will it all begin (and end) suddenly, or gradually?

We may just have to learn the stars, and pray for clear weather.

One of the few pieces of technology I feel comfortable with, have mastered completely and am capable of exploiting fully, is the magnetic compass. And now you're telling me it might just soon become obsolete?
