I've always felt the purpose of photography was to document reality accurately, not aesthetically. Do you want a dramatic, magazine-quality shot of a sporting event or fashion runway, take a 100 exposure motor drive and one of the shots will be an award-winner, even if your eyes were closed when you took it. In any field, journalism, action, landscape, portraiture, wildlife, architectural, still life, if you take enough pictures under varying conditions one of them will turn out to be spectacular. I used to infuriate my artsy-fartsy photographer friends when I would tell them "Take any color snapshot negative, crop it, and print it on black and white stock, and it will look moody and mysterious." Photography is much like life itself. There is a certain amount of practical skill required with the camera, and in the darkroom, but whether it is a great photograph or not is mostly a matter of trial and error.
