Due to anatomical differences dictated by the infant skull size and the human pelvis design, a man can potentially conceive a child every day of most of his adult life. A woman can produce a mere handful of offspring in a lifetime, and each takes almost a year of gestation and nurturing time. Clearly, from a purely reproductive standpoint, women are to be protected and sheltered, but the species has an extravagant surplus of males, which can then be engaged in hazardous exploratory and experimental activities. This is why traditionally, it has been the men who went to war, hunting, exploring, or on walkabout.

I make no social or political statement here. I am aware that in civilized society these conditions may no longer apply, but millions of years of evolution cannot be ignored just because for the last few thousand we've acquired agriculture and technology.
