An interesting WWII factoid. January 14, 2015 11:40 am bowser

During WWII the Allies bombed the hell out of Berlin.  There really weren’t that many targets there but that didn’t stop them.  It was kind of odd.  Very recently someone I read explained what was going on.

It was clear that there was going to be a invasion of Europe.  It was also clear to the Allies that they had to have air supremacy for the invasion to have a chance.  German fighters flying up and down the beach strafing troops was as big a fear as Stukas dive-bombing ships and land forces.  The Stukas couldn’t operate without fighter cover.

The bombers attacking Berlin were bait.  That was one target sure to bring up German fighters, and then they could be attacked by Allied bombers (who shot down more fighters than did the escorts) and escorting Allied fighters.

At the time of the invasion the German air force had been so depleted that it couldn’t attacking and impede the landings.
