Closing in on Ceres April 20, 2015 3:05 pm podrock

After actually moving away from Ceres after orbital capture, Dawn is moving towards its target and out of Ceres’ dark side. New pictures are coming in, including the mysterious bright spots:

This animated sequence of images from NASA’s Dawn spacecraft shows northern terrain on the sunlit side of dwarf planet Ceres. Dawn took these images on April 14 and 15 from a vantage point 14,000 miles (22,000 kilometers) above Ceres’ northern hemisphere. The spacecraft was settling into its first circular orbit, called RC3 (for “rotation characterization 3″), which it will begin on April 23.
The bright feature called “spot 5″ by the Dawn science team — actually two bright spots close together — rotates into view at right in the last few frames.
Dawn has now finished delivering the images that have helped mission planners maneuver the spacecraft to its first science orbit and prepare for subsequent observations.
Image scale on Ceres is about 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometers) per pixel, compared to 1.9 miles (3.1 kilometers) per pixel in the optical navigation images taken on April 10 (see PIA19317). The sun-Ceres-spacecraft angle, or phase angle is 91 degrees here, compared to 131 degrees in the previous sequence.

Strange thing about the spots, some are seen with infrared imaging; some are not!

These images, from Dawn’s visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR), highlight two regions on Ceres containing bright spots. The top images feature a bright spot scientists have labeled “1″ (located at around 4 degrees north, 8 degrees east on Ceres’ surface); the bottom images feature the spot labeled “5″ (located at around 20 degrees north, 240 degrees east). Spot 5 actually contains two spots, which are the brightest on Ceres.
Each row shows Ceres’ surface at different wavelengths. At left are images taken in visible light, close to wavelengths seen by the human eye. The center images show the same regions of Ceres in wavelengths shifted to the infrared range. The two images at right show Ceres in thermal infrared, where brighter colors represent higher temperatures.
During Dawn’s arrival at Ceres, VIR has been examining the relative temperatures of features on the dwarf planet’s surface. Preliminary examination suggests that region 1 is cooler than the rest of Ceres’ surface, but region 5 appears to be located in a region that is similar in temperature to its surroundings.
The images were captured on February 19, 2015, when Dawn was nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres. Image scale on Ceres is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) per pixel.

Dawn is a project of the directorate’s Discovery Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
