The Confederate flag... June 22, 2015 8:05 am ER

…or the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia for those of you who insist on being pedantic about it, is protected by the First Amendment. Even those who find it objectionable, insulting or even offensive must recognize the Constitutional right of those who wish to display it. Whether flying these colors should be done by government agencies at public expense is another question altogether.

There are those for whom this banner is not a symbol of slavery, rebellion, treason, defiance of the law of the land and simple bigotry. For them, it represents history, tradition, pride, heritage and the memory of those who fought and died for it.

The exact same thing could be said of this flag.
