Have your granddaughter tell her friend that the last acquisition was a huge disappointment, made her break out in a rash or something. Tell her it is an experiment in psychology if she is reluctant to fib. Encourage her to find a way to control the dynamics of the relationship.

I was right where you are at about the same age with 2 grandsons about 10-12 years ago. My middle daughter got a divorce and came to live with us. I was the only father figure to the two boys for the next 10 years, and my daughter was not that interested in parenting.

From my experience, I can only say that no matter how much you love them, there should be some way to cocoon them though the teen years. All that you tried to teach them goes dormant when puberty emerges. If you are lucky and they don't become a victim to the many pitfalls of that period, glimmers of hope start to show up when they turn 19-20. Your efforts will start to show up, to some degree, in their adult persona.

Bottom line: Teens are nearly always a royal pain in the ass and they can be major heart breakers. Get used to the fact that your experience in raising your own kids doesn't seem to change anything. Teens are impossible even at their best. Rough times are ahead sweets, but they will pass and your efforts will have been worth it.
