Pardon the ill timed pun. Nothing more vulnerable than an older gent with his manhood out, peeing. I am sorry this happened.

Rest areas, had you found one, are not much better late at night.

The guys may not have been gay at all, they may have felt the urge to mug a gay guy and they were checking you out. Or maybe they were just out to mug somebody and eventually decided you were potentially too dangerous. Predators are not noble, fierce, brave creatures; they prefer attacking the weak and the outnumbered. They are more like parasites, they prey on the helpless. The bull buffalo rarely gets jumped by lions.

Texas does have a reputation (probably undeserved) as a state full of vicious sociopaths, but it would be difficult proving that with just a few statistics. Texas is a big state, with a big population, and a lot of lonely roads in empty places. That alone might tend to skew the numbers. But I do agree that road piracy is a potential problem. I'm surprised you don't hear more reports of it, its like criminals have not yet realized how potentially lucrative it is. Driving around is pretty safe, but if you suffer a breakdown on a lonesome highway, you are highly vulnerable.
