The only alternatives are Bread and Circuses, or

Guns and Roses.

"Sweet Child O' Mine"

She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything
Was as fresh as the bright blue sky

Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stared too long
I'd probably break down and cry

Sweet child o' mine
Sweet love of mine

She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I'd hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain

Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder and the rain
To quietly pass me by

[3x]
Sweet child o' mine
Sweet love of mine

[4x]
Where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Where do we go?

I wanted everyone to know that I knew the back story because I feel my nose would have been rubbed in it. For some reason, I can't get the Zoners to understand from where I sit. I feel I am lumped dumped , and pumped into one word fits all to the right.
Whatever.

Unions were needed very badly back then.

However, my reason for this song is so much deeper than anyone can imagine here.

...and you won't understand, because you have already made up your mind.

I get that. Saul good.

The song is a 1912 poem by James Oppenheimer, and when I couldn't find the poem at first, I looked for lyrics to the song. And every example I found was wrong in the same way--all copied from the same source, apparently. Finally I found the Chawed Rosin blog, a page with both the text of the poem and a recording of the song, and it turns out that Judy Collins was perfectly true to the poem. Here's the poem.

As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: “Bread and roses! Bread and roses!”

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women’s children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for — but we fight for roses, too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler — ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life’s glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

Lovely, Jody, both Judy Collins's angelic voice, and the words. You're right, I didn't know you were a union supporter. Unions may yet make a comeback, and when or if it happens, their return will be accompanied by songs like that. Labor organizing among textile workers has a long and proud history in America, and it's always had a soundtrack.
