There's something very symbolic about the lighthouse. Although I have never been as totally dependent on them as the mariners of old, I know what a relief and a joy it can be to finally see the flash of the one you seek, and how grateful you can be for those who build them, and work them. Robert Stevenson created many innovations for lighthouse construction, including pioneering the Fresnel Lens.
