Turns out Roddenberry may have been more crow than eagle, I guess. I remember reading an interview shortly after his death, with either Berman or Braga, I believe (a pair who were labelled "the killer B's" by cynical fans). Keeping Roddenberry's bad ideas out of the show was, apparently, a fulltime job.

As well, I thought the film was an interesting study in ego--which, combined with heaps of money, provides show-biz with a volatile fuel indeed.

What was it about? Well, for one thing, it seemed to be about deflating the myth of Roddenberry. It was subtle, but near the end he was essentially dismissed as a failed producer who'd been a brilliant writer on TOS.

Roddenberry's universe really was wacko-doodle, or wacky-doodle, or whatever Hurley kept saying over and over. Or maybe I've just become more dystopian in my old age. I find "Elysium" a more plausible future, though I admit every once and a while I like to take a refreshing dip in Roddenberry's universe and soak my brain in it for 45 minutes to escape this one. He'll always have that.
