I remember reading an interview shortly after his death, with either Berman or Braga, I believe (a pair who were labelled "the killer B's" by cynical fans). Keeping Roddenberry's bad ideas out of the show was, apparently, a fulltime job. As well, I thought the film was an interesting study in ego--which, combined with heaps of money, provides show-biz with a volatile fuel indeed. Turns out Roddenberry may have been more crow than eagle, I guess. Well, for one thing, it seemed to be about deflating the myth of Roddenberry. It was subtle, but near the end he was essentially dismissed as a failed producer who'd been a brilliant writer on TOS. Roddenberry's universe really was wacko-doodle, or wacky-doodle, or whatever Hurley kept saying over and over. Or maybe I've just become more dystopian in my old age. I find "Elysium" a more plausible future, though I admit every once and a while I like to take a refreshing dip in Roddenberry's universe and soak my brain in it for 45 minutes to escape this one.
