My german, though fluent, was never quite sharp enough to pick out all of the puns I heard when living there, but you could tell when they were making them by the smile in the eyes. The only time I have ever heard them used is as<em> double entendres</em>, usually of a sexual nature, in a joke, especially if the subject of the joke is a fool or ignoramus who misunderstands or mispronounces a sexual term.
