Its probably unfair, those events occurred over 60 years ago, but there it is. All the other Scandinavian countries were invaded by the Nazis, all resisted, with varying degrees of success, and all suffered. But the Swedes remained neutral. Now Sweden was not a tiny helpless Denmark or Norway, they were a powerful, well-armed industrial country; the Germans could have taken them, but it would have been very costly for them. Instead, Sweden remained neutral, providing trade, raw materials and manufactured goods (including weapons) for the Nazi war machine, and right of transit to the Wehrmacht troop trains. Like Spain and Switzerland, Sweden gave the Nazis trade, financial and diplomatic access to the outside world.

The Finns were actual allies of the Nazis, and they can’t really be blamed, the USSR was a greater threat to them than Germany. And when war came, the Finns fought alongside Germans, most notably at the siege of Leningrad. I first got turned on to this sordid little history when I saw a picture of a Finnish Bf 109 with a swastika on her tail…ah yes, brave little Finland, standing up so bravely to the Soviet Bear during the Winter war…

Discovering just how true that is was one of the great disappointments of my life. My mother’s side of the family has Swedish roots and the country’s always been something of a fascination for me. As you say, though, there’s definitely a dark side to the “Land of ABBA” (beyond even the fact that it’s The Land of ABBA).

When I was younger I really wanted to idealize the place, but alas, reality never shies away from delivering a good bitch-slap.

After all, if the film crew was there “to show how sad and desperate it was for the refugees”, it wouldn’t make any sense for the refugees to be hostile to them.

N. Europe is full of unrepentant Nazi sympathizers, especially Sweden (it was “neutral” during the war) and Finland (they actually fought alongside the Germans.)

A film crew for the Australian edition of “60 Minutes” was attacked Tuesday by a group of masked men while filming a segment on the European refugee crisis in a suburb of Stockholm.

Swedish news website Avpixlat reported the crew ran into trouble when they tried to film in Rinkeby. As the crew entered the suburb, a man drove up to a camera and asked why they wanted to film there, then deliberately drove over the cameraman’s foot, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Avpixlat reported that six police officers were assigned to protect the crew, but they left suddenly and the situation escalated. A group of masked men reportedly circled the TV crew and began to attack them, throwing punches and glass bottles.

One cameraman “was beaten right across the chin so that a tooth [came] loose,” Avpixlat, which partnered with Australian news Channel Nine for the ‘60 Minutes’ segment reported.

Well, I imagine they went there to show how sad and desperate it was for the refugees, but things backfired. Gee, wonder what could have provoked them?
