I won’t mention the party by name, (in order to preserve the political neutrality of “GeekSpeak”), but the National Committee of one our great national political parties is sending out fund-raising letters disguised as overdue bills, presumably to target folks who don’t take the time and effort to read their mail carefully, or who can’t, into sending them money. They are even signed by the party chairman.

They hijacked my Netgear site, and led me down the primrose path, even to the extent of my turning over control of my computer to them. I didn’t catch on until they tried to sell me some expensive service unrelated to Netgear.

They are good, very good.

…that sends out spam designed to look like official documents. And its not just crooked politicians or criminals that engage in this kind of activity. I find stuff in my mail box every day with fonts, paper and format resembling those from government or legal agencies. There’s a lot of older folks in Florida, and they are not always hitting on all cylinders, mentally. This is sad, but to marketers, its just another business opportunity. These people are despicable, they are trying to exploit another’s personal tragedy or misfortune for their own gain. I have no use for them, or for those who make excuses for them.

I am sure there are many hundreds more that get blocked by the filters…

ANY email telling me to click a link, I make %100 sure to know for certain its legit before clicking…

Surprisingly, many ‘official’ emails have links in them, which seems dangerous in terms of security because it trains people to click links assuming they are safe….

Years ago I worked at a bank, and one of the network security guys fell for a phishing scam. I can’t remember specifically where the bad guys were based–eastern Europe, I think–but they managed to scrape a few thousand dollars out of his account.

The bank fired him over that, which I thought was more than a little draconian…otoh, he *was* supposed to be a security expert…
