Sure, it was quickly decided to plant the suspicion that he was illegitimate, unqualified and an outsider: Socialist, Kenyan, Muslim. But the tactic goes much further back, and it has been applied to anyone who might protest the Conservative program: the eternal Liberal.

You've heard how the Liberal is consistently characterized. He is weak, he is indecisive, he is a coward, a natural collaborator and Quisling. He is unpatriotic, he makes excuses for evil, he is an elitist dilettante, he is over-educated and over-intellectual (and a snob, to boot!), he spoils children, coddles criminals and simply LOVES to pay high taxes and willingly places the statist boot on his own neck.

For generations, the Right has meticulously constructed this Liberal stereotype, and contrasted it with the Noble Conservative, honest, hard-working, pious, patriot, generous and forgiving to a fault. He relies on his innate common sense, not elitist intellectual philosophizing. Conservatives love to paint themselves as the cloth-coat Republican of Nixonian lore: the self-reliant, independent, upstanding small businessman or docile employee. It is a description that dovetails nicely into the profile of the insecure lower-middle class wage slave Conservative demagogues have systematically exploited economically for decades, and whose vote they need to maintain their hegemony.

But they have sung this song so long and so loudly that their victims have started to believe it, have even embraced it, and now have incorporated it into their own world view. Hence Trump.

For those on the Right who have trouble following this, I offer a simple analogy, a metaphor even they should be able to understand. The Conservative movement has created a Frankenstein Monster to do its bidding, and that golem has unexpectedly come to life and now threatens the GOP itself.

The innate justice of this turn of events, this cosmic karma, makes me wonder if maybe there isn't a god after all.
