And it isn’t just limited to AGW issues. It has long been useful to display trends on any noisy cyclical time series data with a definite long term trend. Here are just a few examples of both ascending and descending spirals.

Note how regardless of which month you pick, the amount of Arctic Ocean ice has decreased steadily and substantially for the last 36 years. The effect, however, is most dramatic for the summer months. For the month of September, the ice volume has dropped from about 17 million km^3 1979 to 4 million km^3 in 2012. And once the thick multi-year pack ice is gone, only the thin winter freeze will be left, and it will go away every summer. What more proof could anyone possibly ask for?

The temperature during summer in the already very hot Middle East and North Africa will increase more than two times faster compared to the average global warming. This means that during hot days temperatures south of the Mediterranean will reach around 46 degrees Celsius (approximately 114 degrees Fahrenheit) by mid-century. Such extremely hot days will occur five times more often than was the case at the turn of the millennium. The coming migrant crisis will completely dwarf the current situation... and the current situation has already lead to the rise of fascism in Europe... The extreme-right Sweden Democrats — a party started in the late 1980s as a white supremacist group — has steadily risen in polls, and in one survey in August even ranked as Sweden’s most popular party. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party came second during last month’s regional election, while Greece’s neo-fascist Golden Dawn gained the third largest percentage of the vote in both of the country’s parliamentary votes this year. The abyss lays ahead, and far too may are sprinting towards it... The next few centuries look pretty bad- assuming humanity lasts that long.
