Some of us were not at all skilled at approaching the opposite sex and the gorgeous ones were inaccessible. The upside was that it left us more time for play and sports. As a wealthy man, a guy who knew his way around men-women and liasons very well told me once, women were fine, but it takes a bunch of guys for a good time.

Now we really wanted to be cavorting with the women but were stuck with each other most of the time. And what we experienced, but weren't able to appreciate, is a more relaxed, more genuinely intimate time. Without the sexual tension inevitable when women were around one could get comfortable being vulnerable, goofy and awkward.

Eventually we all paired off and those times were gone. We were off to other experiences, just as valid but certainly not the same.

I suspect some people won't be able to relate to this and will say that the most rewarding experiences they had involved the opposite sex. And I say that's great but it just wasn't available to some of us early on.

I wish I'd had this perspective at that time.
