Notes from the 21st century June 25, 2016 6:19 am ER

Sometimes you see (or fail to see) things that just leave you shaking your head.

On the local morning TV news there was a story of a quack plastic surgeon arrested for maiming his patients. One of his victims was photographed lying on a hospital bed on her stomach. the results of a botched butt enhancement procedure prominently displayed. Unfortunately, the area of interest was deliberately blurred, no doubt to spare me the shock of having to witness her private parts. I am not opposed to protecting the lady’s modesty, but why show the picture at all?

A similar incident occurred a few months ago. A swimmer was shown on the beach, his leg severely injured as the result of a shark attack. Again, the leg was deliberately blurred, no doubt to spare me the shock of having to see a horrible wound. The massive tissue damage was replaced by a pink oval. Again, why bother with the censorship? Why not just refrain from publishing the picture in the first place?

Its only a matter of time before the likenesses of crime victims and suspects are fully displayed, but deliberately blurred to protect their privacy. Am I missing something?
