Trump doesn't stand a chance in a debate with policy wonk Clinton, but he knows he's way behind and Clinton has much more to lose than he does, so he has little choice but to risk it. For her part, Clinton knows if Trump gets lucky it could cost her the election, while if she performs as expected his fans won't suddenly switch sides and nothing much will change. The upshot is she has everything to gain by ducking the debate, and failing that, having it happen when nobody's watching. He has to take the chance.

I don't think Trump is trying to duck the debates, I believe he really is trying to max out their impact in the event he gets lucky and Clinton stumbles. Remember how grim things looked for Obama after that first debate with Romney?

OTOH, that Trump would lie about the NFL letter is no surprise. The man is a compulsive liar, even when the risks of doing so far outweigh any possible benefit. All politicians are wont to stretch the truth if they think they can get away with it, and if its worth the risk. But with Trump, it appears to be second nature, it just comes naturally to him, even when he doesn't have to. He can't seem to help himself. He knows that his supporters will forgive and forget, because they know extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.

Damn! This is shaping up into a real election. After generations of barely distinguishable candidates, America finally gets to choose between two genuine opposites. The result will define for the next century what kind of country we really are. I don't know about you, but I'm becoming increasingly afraid to find out.
