Its the whole constellation of anti-intellectualism, ignorance, hate and anger that bred him, and the carefully calculated program of propaganda and indoctrination that made it all possible. Donald Trump may express certain unfortunate American values, but they have been carefully cultivated by people who really should have known better.

This will not go away after Trump is defeated. This poison will linger in our body politic for another generation. I really fear for my country.

See my Thread "Das Boot", above.

I'll be honest, I really don't get the pessimism.

The world is far better off than it was, Donald Trump's slogan notwithstanding. There is serious cause for Alarm were DT to get elected, and I agree it would take one of those events you listed to usher him in. Still, I think its a long shot.

I think Wikileaks has some sensational evidence against the Dems, or at least, evidence that might be interpreted that way, or that Republicans can seize on regardless of whether they even believe it or not. And Assange will release it at just the right moment, a week or two before the election.

Or all it will take is some particularly spectacular terrorist action, or a military reverse somewhere, or a quick and catastrophic economic collapse. I think ISIS is on the run now, but the Far East is smoldering right now, both DPRK and and the PRC is in a position to do something that could change this election overnight. An October war in the S China Sea could change everything.

Do I have any special knowledge or insight? No. I'm just a pessimist, and I always mentally put myself in the head of my enemies. If I was them, that's exactly what I would do. If I were an enemy of the US, I would want Trump to be President, or I would want the confusion and indecision brought about by an unexpected and dramatic election SNAFU in the US.

You heard it here first, folks.

Nobody really gathers at the water cooler where I work, but lunchtime conversations are a pretty good gauge of political sentiment for the conservative POV. Admittedly I participate in some of these conversations, so I can't be sure that my own viewpoints haven't skewed things a bit. To be truthful, I hope they have.

We've gone from folks wanting to vote for Trump because "he's better than Hillary" to "Hillary is going to win anyway". Usually followed by discussion of firearms/ammo sales and when to time the market. Those buying need to do their buying before November, those selling should wait until after November...

The defeat is already in for Trump. The conservative base is unenthusiastic at best. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that you can't win an election that way. Conservatives are not backing Trump in a show of solidarity.

The way I see it, conservative fall in 3 categories:

Never Trumps Totally embarrassed, and actively campaigning against him and vowing to never vote for him regardless of the outcome.

Trump Lites Embarrassed but still scared of Hillary and her Supreme Court nominees. So planning to vote for Trump, but not making a lot of noise about it, 'cause it stinks to be in that position, and history may yet judge them.

Trumpets These folks have chosen their supreme leader, and everything he says is Yuge!!!

Obviously I fall into the Never Trump category. Most conservatives I know land in the Trump Lite category. I have watched a few cross over in to Never Trump as the Donald's spewings get worse and worse. I haven't seen any go the other way.

I forsee a record low turnout for Trump in November. Bill may as well start selecting drapery colors for the West Wing now.
