But I've seen them listed on the inside covers of the paperbacks. So far we've read the first five books of the series, and are eagerly awaiting the release of the last. But I must confess, my favorite, most realistic characters are Miller the cop and Amos. We read all five novels right after watching the miniseries on TV.

I find the television adaptation of the first season to be excellent, even better than the first novel, although some changes had to be made to the narrative for dramatic purposes. We bought the video and have already watched it several times. We suspect the 2nd season will have to depart even further from the story line of the novels, and I am convinced they will be able to pull it off. "Expanse" reminds me a lot of the old HBO miniseries "Rome". It is so rich and detailed that you miss a great deal seeing it only once. In just one viewing, you get the impression that things are glossed over, or left dangling, questions left unanswered. After several passes through you realize nothing is left out, and even future events are properly foreshadowed. You just have to be paying attention to not miss anything.

Someone went to a lot of effort to get this right.

I misunderstood and thought you were just getting in to the book series. If you haven't read them yet there are a couple of novellas you can get as e-books that enrich the story. Some of the tv show drew from the novella called "The Butcher of Anderson Station". There is another one about the inventor of the Epstein drive. Its good stuff.

I haven't been able to watch the second half of the first season yet, since I don't have cable.

Actually I lied, I do have cable, but its basic cable that never gets used. Ever. TWC gave it to me in order to lower my internet bill last time they were passing out rate hikes. Its a backwards world were living in.

The first and last were the best, in my opinion, but they were all worth the effort. My wife and I can't wait till the last installment comes out, or for the 2nd season to come out in video. In my opinion, I liked the SyFy dramatization of "Leviathan Wakes" more than I liked the novel. Its good material, for the reasons you point out, but the screenplay really brought out the best in it.

However its been a few years, so the story has meshed into one large story for me. Cibola Burn was rough ride and possibly the weakest of them all, but I still enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next installment in a few months.

Science Fiction should feel like this IMO. Hopeful of the future, where we finally get off this rock. I know I wrote a spoiler free review here at the zone a while back. I stand by my praise of the series. This is the Sci-fi I missed out on, because I was too young or not born yet when the truly great writers (Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke) were writing. I read them all around the turn of the millennium. I enjoyed their writing, yet at the same time it felt dated and old. The Expanse gave me back the great stories without the embarrasingly dated tech and ideals. James SA Corey and John Scalzi are my goto authors for good scifi these days. Scalzi for his humor, Corey for their devotion to getting the physics as accurately portrayed as possible within their kickass stories.
