Anti-immigrant politics may resonate with un- and under-employed workers who see themselves undercut by cheap and illegal foreign labor. But that's why the illegals are here, aren't they?. They were invited! In Europe, declining birthrates and an aging population have contributed to "guest workers" to make up the slack. In the US, they are employed to do those jobs "Americans won't do". Of course, if we actually had a free labor market, capitalist theory tells us salaries would rise until people started applying for those jobs. Yeah, right. Capitalist theory is conveniently ignored when it threatens profits.

So right wing politicians may fan the flames of anti-immigrant sentiment, but the leadership in the business community wants to see more illegals, not less. They work cheap and cause no trouble for the bosses. This contradiction is not going to be resolved any time soon. You can't buy the trog vote by killing the goose laying the golden labor eggs. Something has to give.

With the Democrats its not cheap labor, its votes. The GOP does not have a monopoly on hypocrisy. As long as the Republicans continue to be schizophrenic on this issue, legal immigrants and native born Latinos will vote for the party who won't deport their friends and relatives, and "amnesty" and "anchor babies" will ensure a steady stream of new Democratic voters for decades to come. (Which is, BTW, why Conservatives go apoplectic when they even hear the words "amnesty" or "path to citizenship" or even "work permit". After all, once they work here legally they won't be afraid to unionize or bargain, strike or job hop for a better salary. Hmmm. That's sounds too much like free enterprise, an institution which is great for the boss but not to be countenanced when the workers embrace it. What the "no amnesty" crowd really fears is not the sanctity of law, but Manuel Labor voting Dem and exercising his right to collective bargaining.

Meanwhile, the only legislation that can actually resolve this issue, a new comprehensive immigration bill, will be opposed by both sides of the aisle in Congress because both sides now benefit from the status quo. Again, there is only one way we can stop illegal immigration immediately and permanently, and that's to fine and imprison American businessmen who hire them. And you know that's never going to happen. So in the meantime, we are distracted by lurid tales of Mexican rapists, drooling Muslim terrorists, and cute, scrubbed, smiling valedictorian "dreamer" kids waving the flag and working soooooooooooo hard in school, because they do love America so.
