All the lighting in that still frame is a single sun-lamp and the earth... and the sunlamp is responsible for essentially all the illumination of the model...

<img src="http://i1075.photobucket.com/albums/w421/rlafon1/slide.jpg">
It is a little dark, but probably more realistic... (edit- actually when I compare more carefully there isnt a huge difference - odd, I really turned down the omni-directional lighting)

I modeled it after this:

<img src="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSsxO5yweXs25C6eOWSjcILCWs9uvs7SqBFnc5dzcULfoF8K89I7w">

The 'earth' is actually an area light - a 4k video clip used as a light source

Is the spacecraft an original design?

I like the brilliant spot of light at the point where the beam exits.

I know you want to show the model--you invested time in building it, after all--but I bet you could crank up the drama in the shot with starker lighting...a nice bright spot for the sun, and a low-intensity area light* for the light reflecting back up from the earth. Just a thought.

Nicely done, though!

*Not sure if they're called area lights in Blender. I think that's what they were called in trueSpace (showing my age).
