Soot and particulates would have a short term effect, a short term devastating cooling- then we would gradually return to the above normal heat. If humanity were to return to the stone age tomorrow we would still have to deal with the effects of the CO2 already released for centuries... The 'half life'* of CO2 in the atmosphere under ideal conditions is several decades, the raised temperatures will increase the rate of 'natural' GHG releases making the effective half life longer. The acidification of the ocean will work to reduce the carbon uptake by the ocean... quite frankly we don't know how bad it it will be, we just know it will be VERY bad...

*Could be worse than that:

http://www.yaleclimateconnections.org/2010/12/common-climate-misconceptions-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide/

Scientists can approach this problem in a number of different ways. They can use models of carbon sink behavior based on their best knowledge of the physics of ocean carbon absorption and the biosphere. They can also use records of changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide during glacial periods in the distant past to estimate the time it takes for perturbations to settle out.

Using a combination of various methods, researchers have estimated that about 50 percent of the net anthropogenic pulse would be absorbed in the first 50 years, and about 70 percent in the first 100 years. Absorption by sinks slows dramatically after that, with an additional 10 percent or so being removed after 300 years and the remaining 20 percent lasting tens if not hundreds of thousands of years before being removed.

It boils down to how the carbon sinks respond, and right now the carbon sinks are not holding up well...Deforestation, thawing tundra, dying reefs...

A general nuclear war would start a nuclear winter, which would counteract the effects of global warming.

Of course, Conservatives don't believe in nuclear winter, either. They believe it's just a hoax invented by Carl Sagan to scare us into unilaterally disarming.

Things have a way of working themselves out in the long run.
