VIDEO CLIP OF DONALD TRUMP, IN WHICH HE SAYS: “Hey, I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “You know, the police say that didn’t happen and all those rumors have been on the Internet for some time. So did you misspeak yesterday?”

TRUMP: “It did happen. I saw it.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “You saw that…”

TRUMP: It was on television. I saw it.

STEPHANOPOULOS: “…with your own eyes?”

TRUMP: “George, it did happen.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “Police say it didn’t happen.”

TRUMP: “There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey, where you have large Arab populations. They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down. I know it might be not politically correct for you to talk about it, but there were people cheering as that building came down — as those buildings came down. And that tells you something. It was well covered at the time, George. Now, I know they don’t like to talk about it, but it was well covered at the time. There were people over in New Jersey that were watching it, a heavy Arab population, that were cheering as the buildings came down. Not good.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “As I said, the police have said it didn’t happen.”

And the comment WAS a slur against mexicans, it was racist bullshit whether he was talking about only the undocumented or all mexicans in general…

(I hope I’m not going to have to make the case about that, because the totality of it is sickening, from Rush Limbaugh and his hate-mongering ilk to Newt Gingrich’s infamous memo upon becoming Speaker, instructing Republicans on the proper language to use to maximally smear liberals and alienate American society from liberalism. And those are just two of the “highlights”).

I’m being very serious. There’s no more dramatic illustration of the way the smear campaign has cheapened conservative thought than our reversal of positions on science.

Ya know Rob, sometimes it feels like liberals are in a divorce with a crazy ex who’s saying “here, take the house! take the kids! take the money, and everything else good! And I’ll take the debts and everything crap!”. I mean, thanks for giving us science in the split and all, but I honestly think America would be better off if conservatives would stop rejecting science.

And there’s the rub, one of them anyway: How can I peacefully coexist with a group of people who are bitterly hostile to the thing I consider the most precious of humanity’s achievements? How can I not think of rightwingers, of Trump’s hordes in particular, as barbarians at the gate?

How can there ever be peace between us?
