Creationism, Intelligent Design, Young Earth, Climate Change Denialism, its all part of the old conflict between science and engineering, knowledge and profit. The Scientist seeks to understand how the universe works. The Engineer seeks to manipulate it for personal gain; or at least, his boss’s gain. True understanding is not essential, just enough knowledge to be able to enforce control over nature and the collaboration of an ignorant public is all they need.

The motives are psychological/ideological as well as economic. The scientist wishes to understand Man and his place in nature. The Engineer just wants to be able to get out of the lab and into management where the real money is. His loyalties are to the firm, not the cosmos.

In the past, in America, only the science of Economics was dominated by pure ideology. Its why we have taken Business Administration (along with Engineering) out of specialized vocational Commercial and Polytechnic schools and elevated them to the prestige of University disciplines. The process continues today, as the academic establishment degenerates into a trade school for intellectually sterile corporate drones. The traditional university liberal arts concept, one of the major cultural achievements of western man since its inception in the middle ages, is now becoming regarded as a sissy school for effete elitists and snooty milquetoasts, perverts and traitors. The community of scholars which led us out of medieval barbarism has been cast in the role of mental eunuchs, of weakness and effeminacy, cowardice and indecision. Nattering nabobs of negativism.

You know, like Jews. Like Liberals. History doesn’t repeat itself, but if you pay attention, you start to see patterns which are hauntingly familiar.
