The political crisis equivalent of DEFCON 2:

Let that Top tweet sink in.
The President is threatening a potential witness.
Publicly.
He fired the man investigating him in a needlessly humiliating and unprofessional way, put words into his mouth, and now is threatening him.

Maybe when TB is done with his outrage against Olbermann he can explain how this latest madness is no big deal?

Let’s dissect this latest insanity, shall we?

Possibility ONE: Comey really DID tell Trump he wasn’t under investigation, and Trump really is so paranoid he tape recorded Comey.

WHY would Trump make this tweet? If Comey really said he wasn’t under investigation and Trump had remained silent then two things could happen:
A) Comey reports that he really did tell Trump he wasnt under investigation; A win for Trump
B) Comey says he never told Trump he wasn’t under investigation, at which point Trump can pull out tapes as a surprise and destroy any credibility Comey might have; A HUGE win for Trump

By tweeting about the tapes, however, Trump has lost the advantage and just appears to be threatening a potential witness.

Possibility TWO: Comey really DID tell Trump he wasn’t under investigation, but Trump didn’t secretly record the director of the FBI.

This means Trump is trying to bluff Comey- again WHY make the public tweet? He could have bluffed Comey in private without publicly threatening him and looking like a desperate bully… and if Comey goes ahead and says that he never told Trump he wasn’t under investigation, Trump then has to come out and admit he was bluffing about the tapes- making Trump look weak and foolish… again he looks like he is intimidating a potential witness.

Possibility THREE: Comey NEVER told Trump he wasn’t under investigation, and so Trump has no tapes.

WHY would Trump make that tweet? The only reason would be to convince his base (the only people stupid enough to buy this story, and amoral enough to support this behavior) that Trump really is innocent… he will never be able to supply the tapes, of course, but that doesn’t matter… all he has to do is keep his base with him in the short term- soon they will be too busy defending his next outrage to wonder about the tapes that never materialized.

Personally I think Possibility THREE is what is really happening- Comey has already let out the fact that Trump tried to make him take an unconstitutional ‘Loyalty Oath’, and I dont think Comey seems too worried about whatever tapes Trump may, or may not have…
