...but Donald Trump may be the best thing that has happened to US Progressives since FDR. Not only is the contrast between The Donald and Barack Obama a constant reminder to the nation of what 21st Century Republican politics is all about; but his inept and boorish antics will keep many of those policies floundering in spite of the political advantages the GOP has accumulated through voter suppression, redistricting, and legislative obstruction and sabotage.

Remember, the Conservative agenda is to exempt the rich from taxation and to free their businesses from all labor, market, environmental, safety and health regulation. They talk a lot about cutting spending, but history has shown the only spending they do cut is that which benefits the poor, working and middle classes. In addition, they support a religious, social and cultural agenda which is the desire of the most petty, vengeful, ignorant, regressive and reactionary members of society. All we have to do is observe the culture of violence, crassness, criminality and bad manners they have injected into the American political dialogue to see they really don't care about anything but insulating themselves from the destruction and corruption they have introduced into the society.

Mr Trump may do a lot of damage, but many of his programs will fail, or be blunted, and his example of barbarity, crudity and vulgarity will hopefully inoculate our country once and for all from this 19th century commercial feudalism they wish to inflict on us all, along with the resurrection of the nativist, racist and militaristic demons of our collective past. Oh, and let's not forget to include "fascist" in that list. I, for one, refuse to succumb to the latest fashion of not calling a spade a spade when I see one busily trying to bury me. If it walks like a duck...

If Mr Trump does not finish his term, for whatever reason, these policies will be pursued by more competent and even more ruthless Party functionaries, masquerading under a well-groomed and poised civility and a patina of civilized behavior over a veneer of '"traditional values". The Night of the Long Knives is fast approaching. It isn't just bleeding heart libs who feel this way, forces in Trump's own party are already maneuvering to squeeze him out and replace him with someone who actually has a chance to implement this program. You've been watching the news, haven't you? They will blame the Liberal Media and the Washington Establishment for his demise, make a martyr out of him, and unleash their torch and pitchfork lynch mobs on us. Years later, they will take credit for doing the statesmanlike and responsible thing by getting rid of him. Something very similar happened with Nixon. Republicans now are telling us how terrible he was and how brave they were to remove him, but back then they were covering for him and making excuses for him, looking the other way and pretending nothing was happening. Just like they are doing for this clown today.

Cut the Trumpster some slack. For the time being, he's the best we can hope for.
