...and the Republicans call it an "isolated incident due to a disturbed individual". A left wing loony shoots a GOP Congressman and they blame the Democrats for fostering a "climate of hatred".

You could go crazy writing and comparing lists of atrocities and statistically looking for trends, trying to blame one side or the other. The decision will depend mostly on who's doing the cataloging, and I'm sure there is baseless propaganda and exaggeration on both sides.

But it wasn't a Dem Congressman who yelled "liar" at the President during his State of the Union Address. The Dems never accused Trump of being a Muslim Socialist born in a foreign country who faked his college transcripts. And it wasn't MSNBC who accused the GOP candidate of operating a kiddie prostitution ring out of a DC pizzeria. I don't have to explain it to you, you've seen them at work right here on the Zone -- not just in economic and political issues, but in scientific ones too. These people are trolling the whole planet because they think their taxes are too high.

Don't fall into the false equivalency trap. Some progressives MAY lie, and maybe not ALL Conservatives lie. But the massive campaign of falsehood and hatred you're seeing now is mostly on the Right. Period. Full Stop. End of Story. They've been dying for revenge ever since we sent their sleazebag Vegas houseboy Nixon straight to Hell where he belonged. They are orchestrating and fanning it to fire up their base, a middle class that is being savaged by Right Wing tax and regulatory policy and trickle down supply side theories and are finally starting to realize they've been conned by the same bastards they've idolized and tried to emulate. They are terrified that the Obama/Trump comparison will be made by history and it will look like the Clinton/Bush or even the Hoover/FDR comparisons. Dubya didn't work out the way they planned, now they see they're got someone even worse on their hands now.

That's what's happening, and that's why. No issue is ever purely black and white, not everything can be settled logically and mathematically, like Capt. Queeg's missing strawberries. But sometimes you have to take sides in the gray zone and fight for what you know is best and what is right for everyone involved, not what benefits you and your class financially in the short term.

I have confidence in my intellect, my education, my lifetime experience, and in my sense of morality and ethics. I have made my choice.

It's all part of the price of freedom, isn't that how conservatives see it? It's just another day in America.

Just remarking how the times force us to make that twisted calculation every time some new outrage occurs.

Murder is never an option in politics. First, you can't kill an idea, good or bad, by killing people. No one individual can sway an entire society. And even if you could, it is more likely to make a martyr of the victim, causing his movement to become stronger and give his followers an excuse to use extraordinary methods to try and silence your side.

Look at what happened to Julius Caesar. Sure, Brutus and the boys may have stopped a tyranny in a misguided attempt to keep the Republic. But what they got was civil war and an Emperor instead. And they paid with their lives.

If you're in the right place at the right time, you might be able to apply enough leverage to change the course of history. But you will have little ability to choose whatever new path it embarks on.

When I woke up today the shooter and his politics were known... and I make no excuses for this guy... nothing in my post reads like that...

The guy was trying to murder many people, and I am glad he failed... It would have been good if he had been captured alive to be questioned, but that wasn't likely an option...

Perp Pause: the time interval between when you hear of a shooting incident and when you learn the shooter's political or ideological leanings. Admit it; haven't you waited breathlessly until you learned what the allegiances of the perpetrator of the latest outrage were so you could respond indignantly?

During the pause, this is what you're thinking: Who did this? A black guy? A Muslim? A Mexican? A racist redneck? A religious fanatic? A skinhead militiaman or anti-government cowboy activist? A hippy or Occupier? Normally, you keep a low profile until you learn if its one of US or one of THEM. Then you make excuses for the former, or go on the warpath for the latter.

But regardless of the politics of the shooter, or even if he's just some nutjob with no politics at all, they at least all share one thing in common. They were able to get a powerful weapon much to easily.

So, do you really want to live in a country where anyone who feels victimized by the authorities feels he has the god-given Constitutional and moral right to attack the State with a military firearm? Well, you got it now, Jack. Deal with it.
