But people who've seen totality say it is several orders of magnitude beyond that. Like the Grand Canyon, no amount of preparation or study can prepare you for the actual experience. You won't be that far away in NC, I suggest you drive a few extra hours and see the full Monty. It may be your last chance.

I'll be turning 70 a week later, and even though I realize there's a good chance I may be clouded out, I will never forgive myself if I don't at least try.

Got the glasses, have a plan...

My Sister-in-law sent the glasses for my recent birthday, two pairs of nice plastic ones and a half-dozen cheaper cardboard ones just in case you need to pass them out.

Mrs. P and I both have family and friends in the SE so we'll be down there, probably in North Carolina, on top of a Blue Ridge Mountain. While it will not be at totality at our intended viewing site (99.54%), it'll be damn close and we'll have a view of the shadow as it sweeps eastward over South Carolina's piedmont and down to the low country. That, and we'll not have to drive anywhere.

Here's a nice little web page that shows how the eclipse will look from any location:

https://eclipsemega.movie/simulator

Also, NSAS's interactive map is quite nice. Click on a point and you get all the info.

It will be a 10 hour drive if we go the most direct route- but we plan to take a scenic route... renting a cabin in the path of totality and hope to beat the crowds to a mountaintop a few hundred yards from the centerline.

Thinking of buying a 360 degree camera to film it for my mother so she can see it in VR goggles if she cant make it out to it...

I already got the glasses for my wife and myself: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008234JNQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
