...there is a physical and psychological similarity between Trump and Yeltsin. I know this is totally irrelevant, but to Trump fans I'm sure it is imbued with great significance.

The USA and the USSR have been following parallel histories, only slightly out of synch. Both demonstrate the failures of their fundamental political paradigms--Corporatism, and State Communism.

This is reflected in their leadership. GW Bush and Brezhnev were analogs of one another, the last sputtering gasp of the ancien regime.

Obama and Gorbachev attempted to salvage what was left, to reintroduce humanity and reason, but failed. The system was too far gone, too corrupt, too unstable.

Boris Yeltsin and Donald Trump are the dysfunctional buffoons who ruled fitfully during the interregnum.

In Russia we now have Putin firmly and brutally in charge. The masses long for stability. His American counterpart will probably be Pence. There is a perverse sense of symmetry there, and both their names start with a "P".

They may be ashamed of this president's actions, but they know it is too late- they publicly whored their principles to a madman and now that it is turning into an unprecedented disaster they understand the reality...

The reality is they went too far down the path to hell to turn back... the only way they survive is if they ensure this madman stays in power - if that means they have to violate the constitution and deprive millions of their votes, then they will grimace and do it.

If their president goes down, they know they are all finished... because they sacrificed all they claimed to stand for in order to get him elected. THAT is why they are going after the voter rolls...

If they are to survive, then the last election must be the LAST election.

...not on the deplorable trogs he is pandering to but to the more moderate "mainstream" conservatives who may find his policies distasteful and barbaric but will not go on record to oppose or criticize him because they still find their own economic and social agenda dependent on him and his more extreme followers.

Again, I strongly suggest we compare contemporary American events with Germany between the World Wars. Most Germans did not agree with the Nazi program, and felt Hitler was, at best a ridiculous buffoon but they made his seizure of power possible by allowing him to get away with it.

I realize some of you reading this may be offended by my insistence on comparing our recent history to the rise of the Third Reich. Well, that is precisely the effect I wish to have, you really need to be offended--and hopefully, insulted. It won't be just the bigots, racists and fascists who will bear the responsibility for Trumpism. Those who choose to remain silent, make excuses and look the other way are equally guilty for what will happen. And even those who resist heroically will still have to face the full consequences if Trump and his allies succeed.

Like Germany, we too are a democracy; America will get the government it deserves.

You see what he is doing, don't you?

http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2017/07/26/trump_administration_argues_federal_law_doesn_t_protect_gay_employees.html

What he is doing is as obvious as it is clumsy- he realizes he is starting to piss off even the republicans that voted for him- so he is trying to bolster his support among the most bigoted and fanatical religious right by turning on the LGBT community...

Banning transgender people from the military, declaring that America worships God and now this- all in one day...

He is simply declaring war on a vulnerable group of Americans to distract the rest of America from his serious crimes.

If you only consider the number of Americans to die prematurely during their presidencies...

Fun fact, Lincoln -unlike Trump- massively won the popular vote...
