The hateful and barbaric rants of racists and other supremacists are certainly deluded, but at least those who indulge in them can be characterized as sincere. They actually believe this nonsense.

It is those who recruit these people and indulge these murderous fantasies in order to further their own class agenda and ideology who are truly unforgivable. I don’t really believe that racism is necessarily an integral part of the Conservative movement or of the Republican Party. But I think recent events have finally convinced honest, decent Conservatives that there are those in their ranks who seek to exploit these obscenities for their own use.

This is the true crime, the truly unforgivable sin of the American Right. LBJ got it right, and the reason why it is right. The racists are merely mistaken, those who cynically manipulate them are pure evil, precisely because they may not be racists themselves. They merely tolerate and encourage it. This is not just an isolated and minor aberration, it has evolved into a fundamental part of Republican politics.
