The alt-right often applies the pejorative “snowflake” to those of us that are outraged by racism, fascism and injustice. They think it belittles us somehow to label those that stand against their bigotry and hate. Now they have a president that openly backs them, they feel it is safe to sneer at justice, to openly devalue the lives of others, to persecute fellow Americans on the basis of their religion, skin color, or sexual orientation- to march without masks. They feel it is safe to go on tiki-torch parades carrying the emblems and shouting the slogans of evils our nation has shed much blood and treasure to defeat in the past.
But they miscalculated.
Their kind never have been students of history- they do not realize that over the history of this nation, of this world, the snowflakes have buried those ideologies, those evils, and those that marched in support of them over and over and over. Slavery, Nazis, fascism, Jim Crow… all these had their moments in the sun, and all these and more were silenced by the snow.
From time to time they feel emboldened to crawl out from under the rocks where they have been hiding- but they always get driven back. This is how it always has been, and how it will always be for so long as the greater part of humanity is decent. As Martin Luther King observed: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
In the end, they will become yet another cautionary tale in their grand-children’s history books. Another example of the dangers ignorance and bigotry pose to humanity.
The evil has emerged from under its rock once again. What happens next- what must happen yet again- is inevitable, and should not be delayed.
A blizzard is coming.
Let it snow…
Let it snow…
Let it snow.
