The unfiltered map seemed to show a horde of barbarians, but even when I filtered by type of organization, it was still creepy, because I could see a national distribution for most (except Neo-Confederacy). KKK in San Francisco, in Seattle Black Separatists cheek-by-jowl with anti-Muslims, and across the Sound from White Nationalists. Seemingly clustered in cities, but maybe that's just self-fulfilling in a map that identifies groups of people. I'd say that all of these people collectively would be pretty thin on the ground if spread out equally across the country.

People began to move around a lot in the 20th century, and it seems like we're seeing tribal "camp sites", where people cut off from their tribe and surrounded by Others, find and huddle with other ex-pats.

I look at the map by type, and you can trace a lot of these lost tribes back to a geographical area that's sort of a "clan home" (unintentional pun, I swear). No surprise that the NeoConfeds and the KKK trace out the Southern Diaspora, and marks those groups socially as rural folks. If memory serves, the Black Separatists came from an axis of Oakland and Detroit, originally; they represent an urban culture, and conventionally they're located on the left. Way far out on the left.

Maybe not so much the "melting pot" that's the source of today's social stress, but perhaps the re-melting and re-mixing that keeps rubbing incompatible people up against one another.

I don't know what good that insight might be, since mobility's one of those features of the modern world that isn't going away. Unless Trump promises to end mobility to make the culture-shocked happy, of course. Always the Trump Caveat these days.

Thanks, I think.
