I had gotten a bit annoyed with Jody over healthcare reform in the early of the Obama Admin years, and she probably thinks I’m a dick. After countless discussions about healthcare alternatives here on Zone (and in the nation at large), I mentioned the benefits of single payer where everyone is covered and it comes out of our taxes. Her reply: “I already pay so much for health insurance I don’t want to be taxed on top of it.”

Needless to say my head almost exploded. Months and months of debate and she still didn’t know that she would not have to pay for private health insurance if we had single payer. I suspect she is not alone in that profound ignorance. Much of the republican party is cut from the same cloth.

Want to bet our president doesn’t understand this either?

It was the accepted wisdom that the sexual attacks that did occur were usually the fault of the “townies”, young redneck predators who cruised the colleges looking for coeds because they couldn’t get laid on their own merits (probably due to their rural Southern Protestant Fundamentalism). “Hippie girls” were “easy”, and they “had it coming” because they were “stuck up”. Again, whether this was actually true or not is questionable, but that’s what we all believed they believed. For their part, the girls did not fear “date rape”, “drug rape”, “gang rape”, or attacks by their classmates. It was the marauding stranger that they feared, the outsider, and it was he who the campus police kept their eye peeled for.

There were other factors. USF was a state school, and a commuter school. Most of the students were solid working-class kids, not the ne’er-do-well rich boys and other over-privileged types. There were no varsity sports or fraternities allowed, and the male students had a very high percentage of Viet Nam veterans. It was an older, more mature, more experienced crowd on the average. There was little binge drinking; other, more benign drugs were available.

I get the impression things are different today. It appears, from the anecdotal evidence at least, that rape victims are not so much overcome by violence as by pharmaceuticals, and the perpetrators are no longer marauding outsiders, but the sheltered
sons of alumni or revered and subsidized athletes.

Do I have any studies or statistics to prove any of this? Of course not, but what research do we have (other than fake news planted by the Russians)that Muslims are any more likely to commit rape than Christians?

Sex, God, Guns and the Flag are not the only tools demagogues use to create outraged and victimized majorities.

They simply gave up pretending that they were anything better than what they really were.

I wonder if they will ever realize just how effortlessly TB and others on the right played them?
