I think she could have done a better job of bringing visuals to the technology and the species of the compact. Luckily I read the appendix which does just that but still is lacking in detail. Using symbols to build a language is quite interesting. I assume that's what they're doing, just got to that part. Its one of the few cases where the dramatic presentation is better than the original novel. Not a challenging read, but good for the alien interaction stuff. She also has a sequel out, which I found just as good as the 1st, though it only follows one of the characters from the first...sort of.
